About Us

The Commonwealth's Official Transportation Museum.

The Virginia Museum of Transportation fires the imagination! The whole family can enjoy decades-old steam locomotives while watching modern trains zoom by on busy active tracks. The museum is completely self-guided and offers interactive exhibits for children, in-depth learning opportunities for long-time enthusiasts, as well as a unique experience for the casual viewer of all ages!

The museum is located in downtown Roanoke’s century-old freight station in the heart of Virginia's Rail Heritage Region. The Railyard houses multiple classic locomotives and antique vehicles, including the N&W 1218 class A locomotive. Come and explore our extensive collection of steam, diesel, and electric locomotives, as well as our rail cars and model train exhibits. Visitors also love our large selection of antique vehicles and aviation gallery. Souvenirs and gifts can also be found in the Museum Gift Shop.

We are conveniently located in Downtown Roanoke within walking distance to other museums, local restaurants, shops, and more. Guests may also take the free local Trolley that travels throughout Downtown.

The museum also serves as a unique venue perfect for birthday parties, corporate events, weddings and more.

Free parking is available directly in front of the museum for paying guests, for the duration of their visit. We have a handicap accessible entrance ramp and can provide a non-electric wheelchair upon request. We also have charging stations available for guests with electric vehicles.
