N & W Class Y6a 2156 2-8-8-2 Profile Magnet
The Norfolk & Western Class Y6a 2156 2-8-8-2 S Mallet was built in 1942 in the N & W Roanoke Shops. It was designed to haul freight and coal through mountainous districts. Y class locomotives pulled trains at over 50 mph and were among the strongest pulling compound steam locomotives in the world. The 2156 is currently housed at the Virginia Museum of Transportation; on loan from The National Museum of Transportation, St. Louis, Missouri.
