Norfolk & Western Class J 611 4-8-4 Profile Magnet.
The 611 was built in 1950 in the N&W Roanoke Shops. During its 9 year career, the 611 pulled N&W's famous passenger trains such as the Powhatan Arrow, the Pocahontas, the Birmingham, and the Cavalier. The 611 was recognized in 1984 as a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark. Known as "The Spirit of Roanoke" the 611 was restored in 2014/15 to participate in the Norfolk Southern 21st Century Steam Program and is still an active running steam locomotive for the Virginia Museum of Transportation.
